A homemade Sweet Potato BBQ Glaze that caramelizes beautifully as it bakes, adding the perfect balance of smoky, sweet, and savory flavors. If you’re looking for a juicy, moist, and deliciously bold meatloaf, this recipe is a must-try!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Meatloaf:

  • 1 lb ground turkey (or ground beef for a richer flavor)
  • 1 cup shredded sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce

For the Sweet Potato BBQ Glaze:

  • ½ cup mashed sweet potatoes
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey BBQ sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a loaf pan or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Prepare the Meatloaf Mixture:
In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, shredded sweet potatoes, cheddar cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Add Worcestershire sauce and BBQ sauce, then gently mix until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the meatloaf tender.

  • Shape the Meatloaf:
Transfer the mixture onto the baking sheet or into a loaf pan. Shape it into a firm but not overly compacted loaf.

  • Prepare the BBQ Glaze:
In a small bowl, whisk together mashed sweet potatoes, ketchup, BBQ sauce, honey BBQ sauce, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.

  • Apply the First Layer of Glaze:
Brush half of the BBQ glaze over the meatloaf before baking. This will infuse the meat with sweet and smoky flavors as it cooks.

  • Bake the Meatloaf:
Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

  • Apply the Final Layer of Glaze:
In the last 10 minutes of baking, brush the remaining glaze over the meatloaf for a sticky, caramelized finish.

  • Rest & Serve:
Remove from the oven and let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute for a moist and tender texture.

Notes

For extra flavor: Add smoked paprika or garlic powder to the meatloaf mixture.
For a crispier crust: Bake on a baking sheet instead of a loaf pan for better air circulation.
Storage: Leftover meatloaf can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
Reheating: Warm in the oven at 300°F for 10-15 minutes or in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.
